Within the meanings and richness of family history, themes of autobiography prevail in the paintings and prints of Lucy Sallick. The genres of still life and landscape interweave with images of self and places from home and studio– clay pieces by the children, groceries on the table, paint tubes, brushes, and sketches of landscapes on the studio floor. Pictures within a picture, landscape within still life, landscape with multiple views of familiar trees and shore, rocks and sea. Embedded deep in layers of paint or ink, portraits of self form a web of associations as the past moves into the present.
“When asked, what do I do, I say I’m a painter. But I’m also interested in many ways to make art, e.g. I might stitch a needlepoint, make a “book,” look for wood on the shore.”
